SplitWells
Reactive typing practice for split ergonomic keyboards
The Story
I built SplitWells after developing RSI in my wrists. The Kinesis Advantage keyboard helped, but learning to type on a split ergonomic layout was its own challenge. I went from 120 WPM on a traditional keyboard to struggling with the basics.
I used MonkeyType religiously. After a few weeks, I hit 80 WPM with 98%+ accuracy. Great progress, right? But something was off: my real-world typing hadn't improved nearly as much. Writing prose, terminal commands, and especially code—I was still slow and making mistakes constantly.
That's when I realized the gap: MonkeyType teaches you to type syllables, not characters. It trains pattern recognition with foresight—you see several words ahead and your fingers flow through familiar sequences. Real typing is different. It's reactive, chaotic. You're thinking about spelling, punctuation, unfamiliar words. Terminal commands. Variable names you've never typed before.
The Philosophy
Apps like MonkeyType have their place. But they should be paired with reactive, character-based practice. That's what SplitWells provides.
The goal is simple: train your fingers to move automatically so your brain can focus entirely on what you're typing, not how to type it. When you encounter a word, command, or pattern you've never written before, you should be able to type it fast and accurately without thinking about finger placement.
Speed comes from accuracy, not the other way around. Don't force speed. If you're making mistakes, slow down. You'll find that improving accuracy naturally improves speed—they're deeply linked.
